Grammar patterns

  1. 1

    Noun 1 + 是 + Noun 2

Use 是 to say Noun 1 is Noun 2. Do not put 是 before a simple adjective; Chinese uses other patterns there.

  2. 2

    …,是不是? / …,是吗?

Add 是不是 or 是吗 to check or confirm information, similar to English "right?" or "yeah?"

是 usually links nouns in both speech and writing; beginners can treat it as "to be" only when both sides are noun-like.
