How the scoring works →

What does Chinese Copilot's free HSK Placement Test measure?

It estimates your approximate HSK level from the words you say you recognize: HSK 1–6 plus a small Beyond sample (12 words from the Levels 7–9 list of the GF 0025-2021 standard). It does not measure listening, speaking, writing, or productive vocabulary.

How long does the test take?

About 5–10 minutes: 120 yes/no words in the HSK 2.0 test, 119 in the HSK 3.0 test.

Do you use HSK 2.0 or 3.0?

Both, as separate tests. The HSK 2.0 test uses the six HSK 2.0 levels plus a small Beyond sample. The HSK 3.0 test draws words from the 2025 HSK exam syllabus word list for Levels 1–9. Neither result is an official HSK score. Word sources and rules are on the methodology page.

Is this an official HSK exam?

No. It is an unofficial recognition check for learners. It is not affiliated with CTI Co., Ltd., which organizes the HSK, and does not award certificates.

How is the estimated HSK level scored?

Each level gets a mastery score: words you marked known ÷ words sampled (skipped words count as unknown). You reach a level when every lower level is at 80% or more and that level is at 65% or more. See how the scoring works for the full rules.
