HSK 2.0 vs HSK 3.0: What's Changing?

What the three-stage, nine-level HSK 3.0 framework means if you learned with HSK 2.0, what is officially documented so far, and how this site tests each.

Open two Chinese-learning apps side by side and you may see two different HSK ladders: one with levels 1–6, another with nine levels in three stages, often called "HSK 3.0." They describe related but different frameworks. This post covers what is changing, what the official documents say so far, and how this site tests each framework.

Two names for two frameworks

HSK 2.0 is an informal name for the six-level written exam, HSK 1 through HSK 6, with speaking tested separately in the HSK Speaking Test (HSKK).

HSK 3.0 is an informal name for the newer three stages, nine levels structure, in Chinese 三等九级 (sān děng jiǔ jí). CTI Co., Ltd. (CTI), which organizes the HSK, describes it on its official HSK page as an upgrade of the six-level system to "Three Stages, Nine Levels":

Two official documents sit behind the new system. The first is the national standard Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (《国际中文教育中文水平等级标准》, GF 0025-2021), released in 2021 by China's Ministry of Education and State Language Commission and in effect since 1 July 2021 (MOE Q&A). The second is the new HSK exam syllabus, published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) in November 2025, with an implementation date of July 2026 on its cover. That is the document's date, not the exam switch: CTI's notice says HSK 3.0 will be officially launched worldwide on 13 December 2026. What changes for learners

1. The ladder gets taller

HSK 2.0 stops at level 6. HSK 3.0 adds an advanced stage (Levels 7–9), which both the standard and the syllabus treat as one combined band with a single word list. For most early and mid-level learners, the practical question is still where they sit on Levels 1–6.

2. Word lists are different, not renamed

A level number under 2.0 is not the same target as that number under 3.0. The nine-level lists are larger at the same level number, and the 2021 standard and the 2025 syllabus even differ from each other. If your textbook says "HSK 4" and a 3.0 chart says "Level 4," compare the lists and skills, not the digit.

3. Speaking and translation join the main exam

CTI says the new HSK assesses listening, speaking, reading and writing, plus translation at the advanced levels (CTI). CTI's notice for the second global trial round required HSK 3–6 to be registered together with the matching speaking test, unlike the older model of a written HSK plus an optional HSKK (trial notice, in Chinese). 4. Learning materials follow their own lists

A course labeled HSK 1–6 was built on the six-level lists, and CTI's level pages (for example HSK 4) still describe the six-level papers. When you pick materials, check which list they follow.

What is documented so far

The standard (2021), the new syllabus (published November 2025, implementation date July 2026 on its cover), global trial sittings in 2026, and now a worldwide launch date for the new exam. The second trial round's notice set the exam date as 20 September 2026 for HSK 1–6, offered paper-based and internet-based formats, and said trial score reports are valid for two years.

CTI's notice says HSK 3.0 will be officially launched worldwide on 13 December 2026. Registration for that sitting is in Beijing time: the paper-based test until 24:00 on 16 November 2026, and the computer-based test until 24:00 on 3 December 2026.

HSK Lord (a third-party prep site, updated 27 September 2026) says the last global HSK 2.0 sitting is 7 November 2026, and that every regular 2026 sitting up to that date follows the HSK 2.0 format. The 2026 calendar on GoEast Mandarin also has 7 November as the last Levels 1–6 date before 13 December. Individual test centers' schedules can differ, so confirm the date and the version with your test center or on your registration.

Use this checklist:

  1. Check your registration paperwork for which syllabus or version your sitting uses.
  2. Ask the test center if the listing is unclear.
  3. Don't assume every center follows the same calendar or opens registration on the same day.
  4. Keep practicing listening, reading, speaking and writing. Those skills carry over whatever the framework is called.

How this site handles 2.0 and 3.0: two separate tests

This site offers recognition checks, not exams. The two tests are kept separate because the lists behind them differ.

HSK 2.0 test

The HSK 2.0 test reports a level on the six-level scale. It samples HSK 1–6 plus a small Beyond band: 12 words from the GF 0025-2021 standard's Levels 7–9 list, not from the 2025 syllabus. Lower levels must look solid before a higher level is claimed. Terms like band and Beyond are defined in the methodology glossary.

A 2.0 headline like "about HSK 4" is easy to read if you study with HSK 1–6 materials.

HSK 3.0 test

An HSK 2.0 level can't simply be renamed as an HSK 3.0 level, so the site has a separate HSK 3.0 Placement Test instead of converting results. It uses the same yes/no format and the same style of thresholds, with words drawn from the word list of the 2025 HSK exam syllabus: 17 random words from each of Levels 1–6 and 17 from Levels 7–9 per run. Results use the official stage names (Elementary 1–3, Intermediate 4–6, Advanced 7–9). It is not an official HSK 3.0 score.

Limits of both tests

  • Recognition only: no listening, no speaking examiner, no timed writing.
  • The HSK 2.0 test shows the same 120 words every run, so a quick retake mostly measures memory. The HSK 3.0 test draws new words each run, so results can shift near a threshold.
  • The thresholds are our heuristics, not official cut scores. The methodology page documents word sources, rules and changes.
  • No certificate and no account; answers stay in your browser session.

Which test should you take?

Choosing a textbook or app: pick one ladder and stay with it for a while. Mixing "HSK 3 on App A" with "Level 5 on App B" without checking the lists is confusing.

Need an official score: prepare for the exact format on your registration. Placement sites, including this one, don't replace it.

Short FAQ

Is HSK 3.0 harder? The official documents don't rate difficulty. What they do show: the nine-level word targets are larger than HSK 2.0's at the same level number, and the new exam adds speaking and, at the advanced levels, translation (CTI). Whether it feels harder depends on which levels and skills you compare.

Should I stop using HSK 2.0 materials? Not automatically. Just know which list your materials follow and how that compares with any 3.0 chart you use.

Does this site convert my 2.0 result into a 3.0 level? No. The two frameworks use different lists, so there are two separate tests: HSK 2.0 and HSK 3.0.
