Grammar patterns

  1. 1

    Option A + 还是 + Option B ?

Use 还是 to offer two options in a question and ask the listener to choose one.

  2. 2

    Subj. + Verb + Option A + 还是 + Option B ?

Add a subject and verb before the two options to form a full choice question.

  3. 3

    Subj. + 还是 + [Verb Phrase] + 吧

After considering options, 还是 before a verb phrase can mean “had better” or “it would be better to”; 吧 often softens the suggestion.

还是 is for “or” in questions; for “or” in statements, use 或者 instead. It can also mean “still” or “had better” outside choice questions.
