家 can mean the home you are in or the family you belong to, and it can count a business, as in 一家商店.

   Wǒ zài jiā.

   There are three people in my family.

家 can mean home, the place you live or belong. 房子 is the building. 我在家 means I am at home; 房子 does not swap into that sentence.
