为wèibecause of; for; to

HSK 3word

为 (wèi) means "for," "because of," or "to." It is a preposition that marks the party you act for, work for, or feel for. Put 为 before a person or group, then a verb or adjective: 为你高兴 means happy for you. Do not confuse it with 为了, which marks purpose rather than the beneficiary.

为 often feels a bit formal and marks the beneficiary or the party you feel for; 为了 is a separate word for purpose ("in order to"), not covered on this page.
